Standard II: Parenting

Parenting I: Understanding My Child and What Motivates Them to Do What They Do
Coursework Taught by Steve Allred and Recommended by Washington County School District.

Brief Description: This is a course taught on Tuesday nights from mid August until mid December. This is a course provided to the community, free of charge and based on research collected from John Gottman and other parenting experts. Its primary focus is to help parents understand what motivates children to make choices.

Proven Program Effectiveness for Parents:I can recommend this course firsthand. After having completed this course, my knowledge base of parenting was strengthened, my relationships improved and my children were more self-reliant, self-motivated and self-confident. This course has been in operation since 1995.

Possible Barriers with ESL Parents and How to Overcome Them: Materials are offered in other languages. An interpreter could be helpful for parents learning to speak English.


Parenting II: Understanding Myself and What Motivates Me To Do What I Do.

Its’ primary focus is to help parents understand the motivation behind choices they make as individuals and the effect it has on their children.

Proven Program Effectiveness for Parents: I can recommend this course first hand. After having completed this course, my knowledge base of parenting was strengthened, my relationships improved and my children were more self-reliant, self-motivated and self-confident. This course has been in operation since 1996.

Love and Logic

Brief Description:
Love and Logic is a philosophy founded in 1977 by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D. It is the approach of choice among leading educators, parents, and other professionals worldwide. In addition to books, CD's, and DVD's, Love and Logic holds seminars across the country.

Proven Program Effectiveness for Parents: This program has been in operation since 1997. The information is based on research collected from educators and medical doctors.

Possible Barriers with ESL Parents and How to Overcome Them: Materials are available in languages other than English and a phone service is provided, Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to 5:00pm (Mountain Time) to help guide parents through written materials.


Power of Positive Parenting

Brief Description:
The Power of Positive Parenting, Glenn Latham’s definitive book, upon which this course is built, has been “subjected to more independent, scientific scrutiny than any parenting book in print today. In every instance, it has been shown to be an effective parenting tool. For that reason, it has been adopted by parent training programs, schools, university professors, early childhood and head start programs, and governmental programs as the basic text for teaching parenting skills.”

Proven Program Effectiveness for Parents: This course is offered through Utah State University, University Extension Services. The program is based on research and has been operating since 1997.

Possible Barriers with ESL Parents and How to Overcome Them: Invite an ESL language specialist or interpreter to course work, and print materials in languages needed for parents.


Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP)

Brief Description:
All versions of the program teach extremely positive approaches to understanding and raising children. The STEP approaches include appreciating that children’s behaviors are motivated by a variety of goals, that encouragement for children becoming the best that they can be is extremely important, and that family councils for making decisions for and with children are highly valued.

Proven Program Effectiveness for Parents: Classes can be offered in a seven-week program. This is a setting where parents can ask question and experience open dialogue with a professional instructor. This course is offered to blended families to assist in building new relationships. The information is research based.

Possible Barriers with ESL Parents and How to Overcome Them:Original program for parents of children six to twelve years of age. There is a Spanish language version of this program; STEP Spanish on video.
